CHOREOGRAPHY and "FIGHT DIRECTION"

"My main interest is in developing choreography that supports and develops the character of the combatants. Too many fight scenes neglect the emotional content of the fight. I believe that the combat should be a part of character development, not a distraction from it. For this reason, a fight director should have a thorough understanding of the complex emotions of combat, and the manners in which they manifest in posture, movement, and expression. Few films seem to pay attention to these details...

...I suggest that the fight director study the character first, research the emotional context with the director and the talent, then develop choreography that is both natural for the context and appropriate for the abilities of the actor (and the character)....

...Whether or not the camera is to part of the action (i.e. take the POV of the performer) their should be at least some focal point on the performer, not just the movement. If you feel as I do that any fx or 'edgy' camera work should be either minimal, or applied so skilfully as to avoid any audience dissociation, then it makes sense to me that the same should apply to the action itself." - Ian Sinclair
